Eastern Washington University (EWU) is a public university in Cheney, Washington.

History

In 1880, the city of Depot Springs was renamed Cheney after expressman Benjamin Pierce Cheney. He donated $10,000 for the founding of Benjamin P. Cheney Academy in 1882. Eight years later, the school was renamed the State Normal School at Cheney to train future elementary school instructors. Following WWII, the school grew quickly and became Eastern Washington State College.

In 1992, the campus was highlighted on the National Register of Historic Places, listed as the Washington State Normal School at Cheney Historic District. It was finally changed to Eastern Washington University by the Washington State Legislature in 1977.

Academics & Campus

Whereas the main campus is in Cheney, there is a branch campus called Riverpoint Campus in nearby Spokane that is shared with Washington State University.
