History

In 1937, Jamaica Academy was established as a one-room schoolhouse where Walt Whitman used to teach. It became public in 1844, and in 1909, it became incorporated with the New York Parental School, a home for troubled boys.

County Judge Charles S. Colden appointed and chaired a committee in order to open a free college in Queens. Mayor La Guardia also pushed for the establishment of the new college. Finally, in 1937, the Board of Education built Queens College, the site of the former New York Parental School.
