Cumberland University is a private university in Lebanon, Tennessee.

History

The school was established in 1842 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and got its Tennessee State charter in 1843. In 1854, a school of theology was established. Unfortunately, the Union Army burned the university during the American Civil War. In 1892, Cumberland moved to its present campus location.

During the Great Depression, the institution fell on hard times, and Cumberland experienced many changes after WWII. For instance, in 1946, the Tennessee Baptist Convention took over. The Board of Trust expanded the academic programs in 1982, and the school returned to a four-year degree institution and resumed the name Cumberland University.

Academics & Campus

The campus is surrounded by trees and historic architecture in the heart of Lebanon, just 23 miles east of the bustling city of Nashville. Within its three schools, there are 100+ programs of study, which include e-graduate programs. The schools at Cumberland University are The School of Humanities, Education & The Arts; The Labry School of Science, Technology & Business; and The Rudy School of Nursing & Health Professions.

Over the past three years, student enrollment increased by more than 50%. Currently, there are approximately 2,500 students enrolled. There are 55 student organizations, honor societies, and interest groups, along with three sororities and five fraternities.
