Colorado School of Mines is a public research university in Golden, Colorado. From 2016-20, QS World University Ranking rated Mines as the top mineral and mining engineering institution worldwide. The university is classified among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.

History

In 1859, a supply center for miners and settlers in the Golden City area was founded. Bishop George M. Randall arrived from Massachusetts in 1866 to the territory and saw a need for higher education facilities. He began planning for a university that would include a school of mine.

The Jarvis Hall Collegiate School opened in 1870, and three years later, the School of Mines was created. The School of Mines became a state institution in 1876, and tuition was initially free to Colorado residents. In 1906 the school became the first of its kind globally to operate its experimental mine and use it to teach students. The mine is located in Mt. Zion.

Academics & Campus

The 373-acre campus is southwest of Golden's downtown and north of Clear Creek. The university comprises administration buildings, over a dozen academic and research buildings, a library, indoor/outdoor athletic facilities, and two student centers.
