Boston University (BU) is a private research university in Boston, Massachusetts. It is nonsectarian but sustains its traditional affiliation with the United Methodist Church. What is the history of Boston University?

In 1839, the university was established by Methodists, with its first campus in Newbury, Vermont, before relocating to Boston in 1867. In 1869, three trustees of the Boston Theological Institute, Isaac Rich, Lee Claflin, and Jacob Sleeper, obtained a charter for Boston University.

Which NCAA Sports do the Terriers Play?

The sports teams play in the NCAA Division I and compete in the Patriot League and Hockey East League. BU's mascot is Rhett, the Boston Terrier.

The Terriers' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross-country, field hockey, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field.

Men: basketball, cross-country, ice hockey, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field.

Men's hockey is the most successful sport on campus, with five NCAA championships. The women's rowing program has won two national championships. In 2020, the men's basketball team won the Patriot League Men's Basketball Championship for the first time.
